Beware fake news

Ontario asparagus

The Asparagus Farmers of Ontario have foiled a fake news story published on FreshPlaza.com on May 17. The story alleges a U.S. import shipment of Canadian asparagus is tainted with cadmium.

Ken Wall, chair, was busy negotiating a retraction after he realized that the Centre for Food Safety of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department in the U.S. is non-existent.  Upon first reading, the story appears credible mentioning test results for the contaminant and warning that the investigation is ongoing.

The moral of the story? Be vigilant in media monitoring. Be proactive in defending your industry.  And…eat your asparagus.
