Hazelnut symposium

“If you plant it, they will come.”  That’s the theme of the 9th Annual Ontario Hazelnut Symposium to be held March 27th in London, Ontario.

“The industry has continued to receive strong interest and support from both industry and government,” says Andrew Nixon, project manager, Ontario Hazelnut Association (OHA). “The OHA hosted four tours of grower trial farms this past year that were very well attended and we have built on our relationship with OMAFRA with two recent projects: hazelnut marketing and cost of production. Ontario's acreage has recently grown to more than 300 acres with more nurseries entering the market. There is still much room for hazelnut production to expand to meet the demand.”

Here are details of the March 27th agenda which includes presentations by:

• Sarah Mantz, OMAFRA on food safety and hazelnuts

• Jim Halbeisen, Growers Mineral Solutions on soil health

• Barb Yates, Ferrero Canada on agronomy

• Melanie Filotas, OMAFRA on eastern filbert blight and bud mite

• Margaret May, OSCIA on Canadian Agricultural Program

• Richard Worsfold, Ontario Centres of Excellence on suitability map

• Todd Leuty, OMAFRA on marketing hazelnuts

• Rodrigo Santillan, AAFC on financial programs

• Grower panel:  Mark Brown, Les High and Todd Leuty
