An Ontario greenhouse operation, the Kniaziew Family, founders of Orangeline Farms and Zing! Health Forward in Leamington, Ont., were one of 11 Ontario Farm Family Award winners honoured at the 100th annual International Plowing Match held in Walton, Ont.
Since 2012, the Bank of Montreal has been recognizing farm families for their dedication to Ontario’s agriculture sector and rural way of life through the BMO Ontario Farm Family Award.
“We’re thrilled to honour the leadership of these families in the agriculture sector and their vital support of the Ontario economy,” Julie Barker-Merz, senior vice president, South Western Ontario Division, BMO Bank of Montreal said in a news release.
One of the innovative practices that Orangeline Farms / Zing! Health Forward has been using is insect exclusion netting, which provides an extra layer of protection between the outside environment and the produce.
“We are one of the first greenhouse operations to adapt to this progressive endeavour that puts a physical barrier between the peppers, our consumers and any pests,” Duffy Kniaziew said in a release. “This is an advancement that most organic growers do not currently utilize.”
