The Canadian Produce Marketing Association’s trade show always features new products and innovative packaging. Here is one example that caught our attention.
Jumbo cherries are distributed by Consolidated Fruit Packers (CFP), Kelowna, British Columbia under their Just Picked brand.
“In the past, jumbo cherries have been shipped almost exclusively to China,” says Bryan Key, CFP. “But we’re seeing that domestic customers want these too – crisp with green stems.”
Last year’s cherry crop was exceptional, measuring nine, 8.5 and 7.5-row. “It looks like a traditional crop this year for sizing and timing,” Key says.
Jumbo cherries require specific management by growers, particularly in pruning. “Good growers are rewarded in managing the crop load,” Key says. “The Lapins variety as well as the new varieties such as Staccato work well.”
Sold in one-pound clamshells, jumbo cherries can fetch anywhere from $4.99 to $7.99 per pound.
