The rules are strict for Ontario-grown grapes to qualify for Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) status. But as emerging wine regions cope with climate change and extremes in temperature, growers are turning to older, more cold-hardy varieties. That’s why the 18-member Ontario South Coast Wineries and Growers’ Association (OSCWGA) recently voted that VQA be approached to add the cold-hardy Marquette variety to the approved list.
Expansion of the VQA list can help promote the growth of Ontario viticulture by broadening variety options for grape growers while maintaining the same high VQA standards.
