Podcast episode 2

The Grower Calling – the official podcast channel for The Grower News is pleased to release its second podcast episode with guest John Thwaites, a second-generation fruit and vegetable farmer from Niagara on the Lake, Ontario. In this episode, we talk to Thwaites about growing pears. If you will remember, on our first episode we had Dusty Zamecnick join us, a fourth-generation berry farmer from Frogmore, Ontario. You can listen to his podcast by clicking here

While our discussion with Thwaites will hone in on pears, he also grows other crops too. He grows about 400 acres of peaches, nectarines, plums, grapes and pears at his farm on Niagara on the Lake. He also has a second farm in Norfolk County where he grows asparagus.

In addition to farming, Thwaites also serves on the board for the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association as a director representing tender fruit and is also a member of management committee.

The podcast covers a wide variety of topics relating to pears, from growing pears in a high-density orchard, to different pear varieties including, the Cold Snap and Asian pear.  Other topics covered will include, innovation, how the proposed minimum wage laws will affect the industry, along with advice to new or beginning farmers.
