The Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) has approved a minor use label expansion registration for MaxCel plant growth regulator for increased lateral bud break, improved branch angles and tree structure, and branching of nursery stock and non-bearing orchard trees in Canada. MaxCel plant growth regulator was already labeled for fruit enhancement on fruit trees in Canada. This minor use proposal was submitted by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs as a result of minor use priorities established by growers and extension personnel.

The following is provided as an abbreviated, general outline only. Users should be making crop management decisions within a robust integrated pest management program and should consult the complete label before using MaxCel plant growth regulator.

Application Information

Apples (Nursery stock and non-bearing trees)

To increase lateral bud break and branching of nursery stock and non-bearing orchard trees and to improve branch angles and tree structure.

250-500

(See label for concentration mixing instructions.)

Make first application after trees have reached a height at which lateral branching is desired.  Make 1-4 applications at targeted sites where additional branching is desired as tree height increases through the season.

Applications can be made each time the main leader adds 12 to 15 cm of new growth, or about every 10-14 days.

In the orchard, make a precision application targeted at the site where branching is desired using a single nozzle such as with a backpack sprayer, squirt bottle, or single nozzle on an orchard or boom sprayer. In the nursery, targeted site applications may also be made with more than one nozzle on orchard or boom sprayers, using sufficient water for good coverage without reaching the point of runoff.

Deliver 2-4 mL spray solution to the shoot tip of each tree targeting the uppermost leaves that are still expanding. Do not tank mix with streptomycin or apply streptomycin on the same day.

Toxic to certain beneficial arthropods (which may include predatory and parasitic insects, spiders and mites). Minimize spray drift to reduce harmful effects on beneficial insects in habitats next to the application site such as hedgerows and woodland.

Follow all other precautions, restrictions, and directions for use on the MaxCel plant growth regulator label carefully.
