OFVGA leaders meet with MPPs and ministers

Shown at the OFVGA Lobby Day at Queen’s Park are: (L-R) OFVGA chair Bill George Jr.; Caroline Mulroney, Minister of Transportation and responsible for Francophone Affairs; director Jason Verkaik; director George Gilvesy and executive director Alison Robertson.

Representatives from the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association (OFVGA) were at Queen’s Park on November 26 advocating on behalf of Ontario’s 3,500 fruit and vegetable farmers. Gordon Stock, OFVGA senior policy advisor says that in addition to informing Members of Provincial Parliament (MPP) about the economic contributions of Ontario’s second largest agricultural sector, discussions also focussed on the need for a strong Self-Directed Risk Management program, payment protection, and the value of the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program.

The opportunity was also taken to show appreciation to government for its commitment to supporting the sector through red tape reduction, and support for programs such as Fresh from the Farm, and the Northern Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program, which encourage consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables.

During the day, Bill George Jr., OFVGA chair, and Charles Stevens, OFVGA vice chair, met with several MPPs and political staff, representing a broad range of files and regions within Ontario. The day started with a productive meeting with Minister Ernie Hardeman, responsible for the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, and ended with a meeting with the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Ted Arnott. Other meetings included representatives from the Ministry of Small Business and Red Tape Reduction, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Ministry of Government and Consumer Services, and the Ministry of Energy, Northern Development and Mines. The event was capped off with a reception in the Legislative Dining room, where OFVGA directors and staff mingled with MPPs while enjoying local food and drink.
