According to Successful Farming magazine, the eight-term Jim Costa, a Democrat, has announced his candidacy to chair the House Agriculture Committee. He represents an agricultural district around Fresco in California’s Central Valley.

In his announcement, Costa said that the committee “should reflect the changing landscape of agriculture in the United States.”

California earns $50 billion, the largest farm cash receipts of any state, producing one-third of the country’s fresh vegetables and two-thirds of the country’s fruits and nuts.

Another contender for the role is Georgia congressman David Scott, from a suburban district outside Atlanta.

As the majority party, the Democrats will select a chair in the weeks ahead.
