Apeel Sciences, based in Santa Barbara, California, has announced rapid growth with the opening of offices in the Netherlands, Mexico and Peru. The first office is slated for the Netherlands because the European Union has approved the shelf-extending technology.

Nature has provided the ingredients, but it’s taken researchers a long time to figure out how to coat fruits and vegetables with edible plant material that keeps oxygen out and moisture inside.

Just last month, Houweling’s greenhouses announced a deal with Apeel to “free the cucumbers.” It means abandoning the plastic covering on English cucumbers.

The technology builds on the practical need to extend shelf life while cutting down on food waste.
