BAMA Packaging, based in Oslo, Norway, has engineered new sustainable packaging for blueberries that has earned the company a Scandinavian ScanStar award. This new paper packaging was developed to reduce the use of plastic packaging materials.

“The development of environmentally-friendly packaging solutions is moving rapidly,” says Bama Packaging's Øyvind Briså.

The packaging reduces the need for plastic by 170 tons per year. CO2 emissions are also slashed by 48 per cent. The packaging's shape was designed in a specific way to make optimal use of packing space in trucks.

"From a sustainability perspective, it is important to use as little packaging as possible, but as much as necessary," says Briså. "Fruits and vegetables must be packaged to prevent them from drying out and causing food waste. The new packaging safeguards both the food and the environment, and is mainly made of fibers from trees in Scandinavian forests and developed in Norway."
