Ontario will hold the line on further raises to the minimum wage currently at $14/hour. And a new natural gas program should mean lower heating and fuel costs for fruit and vegetable producers. Premier Doug Ford made the natural gas announcement at the International Plowing Match.

The United Fresh Washington Conference, Sept 24-26, will be the epi-centre of U.S. discussions on fresh produce trade, markets and related public policy issues.  Ontario industry representatives will be there to ensure members remain current and competitive in this climate of uncertainty.

American produce industry to receive $2.7 billion in aid

The American ag secretary Sonny Perdue has announced $2.7 billion to the fruit and vegetable industry to help mitigate losses from the COVID-19 emergency. Of that total, $100 million per month for the next six months are earmarked for a “Buy Fresh” program for food banks and school curbside pickup. 

Polymer Logistics’ Canadian profile in reusable containers for transport and merchandising systems just got a boost with the appointment of Eric Biddiscombe.  His long and broad tenure with Loblaw Companies gives him the ‘street creds’ to grow the Canadian arm of the company.

Hazel Technologies Inc., based in Salinas, California, has developed a small, biodegradable and food-safe insert to extend the shelf life of a carton of fresh fruit. Now the post-harvest sachet is being launched for one of the most challenging fruits to keep fresh – cherries.

Tomato processors are rushing to keep up with Ontario’s $52 million harvest. And a look back at the stats shows just how far the industry has come in average yield per hectare.

We are starting to explore the different markets in our food distribution network, starting with the biggest market: the entire country.  There are only a handful of retailers who really treat Canada as a market. They are: Walmart, Costco and Whole Foods. We do have other national retailers such as Loblaw and Sobeys however they still operate regions such as Quebec separately.

Walmart Canada is purchasing 40 Tesla semis for use at distribution centres in Mississauga, Ont. and Surrey B.C.  The retailer is aiming to reduce its carbon footprint by powering its entire fleet with renewable energy by 2028.
