New chair for Ontario Farm Products Marketing Commission

Pork and chicken producer Amy Cronin has been appointed chair of the Ontario Farm Products Marketing Commission for a two-year term. 

A major fire has destroyed a controlled atmosphere apple storage facility near Port Burwell, Ontario. Owner Kevin Martin estimates the loss at $3 million. 

A Leamington greenhouse vegetable grower has been fined for mislabeling the origin of produce. The Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers has condemned the violations for breaking public trust.

Hazelnuts

Employment and Social Development Canada has initiated a number of integrity audits in horticulture, stressing growers who don’t know the reason for the audit and who can’t apply for seasonal workers until the audit is complete. Murray Porteous calls the process a ‘witch hunt.’

Several long-serving growers and industry leaders were honoured at the Canadian Horticultural Council meetings in Ottawa on March 14.They included John MacDonald, a potato and berry grower from Prince Edward Island.
