Closer™ Insecticide with Isoclast™ active in Leafy Vegetables

Sap-feeding insects are among the most destructive insect pests, causing economic losses in horticultural crops. Management of sap-feeding insects often requires diverse control tactics, including the use of insecticides such as Closer™ Insecticide with Isoclast™ active.

Closer insecticide provides six key benefits:

Effective at low use rates 

Closer delivers excellent efficacy against target pests at low use rates. In leafy vegetables, including Brassica, Closer can be applied at a rate from 40 to 60 mL/ac to control aphids and 121 mL/ac to control tarnished plant bugs. 

 

Fast knockdown and residual control, control through both contact and ingestion

Closer controls insect pests both by contact and through ingestion to provide fast knockdown and residual control. Closer starts working immediately after application and its extended residual activity can vary from 14 to 21 days. This residual efficacy is impacted by the timing and intensity of pest re-infestation, the rate of plant growth, the susceptibility of the insect pest, the initial application coverage and field conditions (i.e. rainfall) among other factors.

 

Excellent translaminar and systemic activity 

Closer displays translaminar movement and is xylem-mobile. With the translaminar movement, Closer moves from the leaf surface into the leaf. With the xylem-systemic movement, it is absorbed and transported upward through the plant’s xylem tissues.

 

Important integrated pest management tool 

Populations of sap-feeding insects have developed resistance to many insecticides representing a wide range of insecticide modes of action. Closer Insecticide with Isoclast active has a unique mode of action, Group 4C, which makes it a valuable tool for controlling economically important and difficult-to-control sap-feeding insects. Isoclast active is currently the sole member of a novel chemical class of insecticides, the sulfoximines. In several field studies, Isoclast active controlled insect populations known to be resistant to neonicotinoids and to insecticides with other modes of action (e.g. carbamates, organophosphates, pyrethroids). The broad lack of cross-resistance between Isoclast active and neonicotinoids is due primarily to differences in metabolism by monooxygenase enzymes, which are the predominant mechanism of insecticide resistance in the field. Thanks to its unique properties and broad lack of cross-resistance, Closer is an important component of an integrated pest management program.

 

Can be used safely around beneficial insects when used according to the product label

Beneficial insects are an important aspect of our environment and food production system. Field studies have been conducted to measure the impact of Closer on several beneficial insects including assassin bugs, big-eyed bugs, braconid wasps, green lacewings, lady beetles, minute pirate bugs and spiders. When applied at field-use rates in these studies, Closer had no significant impact on population levels of any of the beneficial insects measured. Closer is selective and can be used safely around beneficial insects when used according to the product label.
