BCFGA is bringing water security concerns to the national table

.
.

On October 14, the British Columbia Fruit Growers’ Association (BCFGA) participated in a national consultation to help inform the development of Canada’s first National Water Security Strategy.

During the B.C. discussions, participants highlighted the Okanagan’s fourth year of drought, water allocation reductions of up to 70 per cent for some perennial crop growers, and an estimated $1 billion in agricultural water infrastructure needs.

Discussions reinforced the need for greater federal investment in irrigation and water storage, improved coordination between governments, and Business Risk Management (BRM) programs that better respond to drought and flooding.

For tree fruit growers, reliable water access is essential to both annual production and long-term orchard viability. BCFGA will continue advocating for practical investments and policies that protect growers and strengthen farm profitability.

The national engagement period is open until October 25, 2026. Link here: https://www.canada.ca/en/canada-water-agency/national-water-security-strategy/public-engagement-towards-nwss.html
