There are still no confirmed established populations of Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) in Canada. However, the insect has started to spread in Michigan and there were three observations of SLF posted to the website of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) in September: one in Amherstburg and two in Windsor. CFIA is enhancing its surveillance efforts in the Windsor area. An interception of a dead SLF insect was noted in Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle, Québec, also in September 2024. 
 
 

With the LENS and Niagara growing regions being so close to high traffic U.S. border crossings and a lot of transport of grapes between regions during harvest, the Grape Growers of Ontario are encouraging heightened vigilance when receiving shipments and scouting vineyards. These insects are excellent hitchhikers.
