Canada walks away from U.S. trade negotiations

.
.

Prime Minister Mark Carney held a televised news conference hours after negotiations broke down in Washington. He has announced retaliatory tariffs on about $20B worth of U.S. goods for September 8.

Steve Verheul, Canada’s chief trade negotiator from 2017-2021, wrote an opinion piece for the Globe and Mail titled: “The U.S.’s deal was no deal at all.”

For next steps, he advised three actions:

  •
  • -  Focus on cultivating and incentivizing our American allies
  •
  • -  Strengthen and better unite Team Canada
  •
  • -  Support Canadian businesses facing the impact of U.S. tariffs
