Asparagus Farmers of Ontario (AFO) has announced that Alida Acuna is the new executive director effective October 2026. A 2018 graduate of the University of Guelph, she began her involvement in the asparagus sector while working with the university's asparagus research program.
Prior to joining Fox Seeds and AFO in 2023, she worked with the Ontario Hazelnut Association and South Central Ontario Region Economic Development Corporation (SCOR EDC).
In her new role as executive director, she is committed to advancing AFO's mandate of representing and supporting Ontario asparagus growers through industry advocacy, research and innovation. One of her goals is to increase collaboration with government and industry partners. She is passionate about strengthening relationships, supporting growers, and contributing to a sustainable and prosperous future for Ontario's asparagus industry.
“The board of directors and our growers are incredibly excited about this announcement,” says Mike Chromczak, chair, AFO. “We appreciate the contribution Alida has already made to our industry. The experience, energy and vision she brings to this leadership role will elevate our industry and benefit all of our growers.”
The farmgate value of the sector is valued at $40.6 million, accounting for 75 per cent of total Canadian production. The perennial crop is grown on about 3,500 acres.
