Massimo Bergamini, executive director of the Fruit and Vegetable Growers of Canada (FVGC), has announced the appointment of Dr. Erik Nielsen to the newly-created role of director of policy, research and public affairs.
Nielsen brings more than two decades of leadership experience in public policy, advocacy, and strategic communications across global development, trade, environment, and government relations. He has held senior roles at Export Development Canada, Plan International Canada, Nutrition International, and Global Affairs Canada. With a doctorate in International Environmental Policy and professional experience in 10 countries, he offers a unique blend of domestic and international insight to support Canada’s agricultural sector.
“As the voice of Canadian fruit and vegetable growers, FVGC must ensure its priorities and concerns are heard and acted on,” said Bergamini. “We’re pleased to welcome Erik to the FVGC team as his experience in policy and advocacy, along with his talent for forging strategic partnerships, will be pivotal as FVGC intensifies its efforts to deliver results for Canadian growers.”
In his new role, Nielsen will lead FVGC’s policy development and advocacy strategies, oversee research initiatives that support evidence-based decision-making, and guide engagement with government and stakeholders to advance the interests of Canada’s fruit and vegetable growers.
He is joining FVGC at a critical time for the Canadian fruit and vegetable sector. “Fruit and vegetable growers are on the front lines of food security, climate change, and economic resilience,” says Nielsen. “I’m excited to work alongside such a dedicated team to advance policies that strengthen the sector and ensure Canadians continue to have access to healthy, sustainable food.”
He will begin his new role on August 18. As part of his onboarding, he will conduct outreach to members and sector leaders to gain firsthand knowledge about the key issues and concerns of the fruit and vegetable sector.
