Farmers’ Market of the Year is in Newmarket

Farmers' Markets Ontario has announced that the Newmarket Farmers’ Market as the Farmers’ Market of the Year. Representing more than 180 farmers’ markets across Ontario, Farmers' Markets Ontario is committed to supporting and promoting vibrant, sustainable farmers’ markets across the province.

 

“We are very excited to recognize exemplary farmers’ markets that added value to their communities and the Ontario farmers' market sector this past market season,” says Farmers’ Markets Ontario executive director, Catherine Clark. “This prestigious accolade reflects the commitment and dedication of farmers’ markets that go above and beyond to foster community engagement and support local agriculture.”

 

Cathy Bartolic, who has just concluded her second year as president of the market, stated: “I’m just thrilled with the news. I work with an amazing team of people who have stepped up to help, and we are over the moon at having been chosen as the winner. On a nice day, we get at least about 1,000 people out, and to watch the market evolve from the year I started as a vendor to what it is now has been amazing.”

 

Lisa Thompson, Ontario Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, emphasizes the vital role farmers’ markets play in the province's agriculture and food industry, stating, “Farmers’ markets play a key role in Ontario’s agriculture and food industry, offering a venue where people can connect with local farmers, learn how farmers employ best practices to produce food, and ultimately purchase some of the good things that grow in Ontario. I am pleased that the Newmarket Farmers’ Market is being recognized for their hard work throughout the years”.

 

The Farmers’ Market of the Year award celebrates the outstanding efforts of the Newmarket Farmers’ Market in contributing to the growth and success of the local farmers’ market community. Farmers' Markets Ontario and the Government of Ontario applauds their dedication to fostering connections between consumers and local farmers, showcasing the diversity and quality of Ontario-grown products.
