The Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) is proud to host the annual Kids FarmSafe Week, taking place May 11-17, highlighting the vital role of farm safety in “Nurturing the Future of Agriculture.”
Now in its third year, Kids FarmSafe Week encourages farm families, farm workers, and farming communities to #KeepKidsFarmSafe with activities and resources that raise awareness about farm health and safety risks for children and youth.
According to recent Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting data, 435 children and youth lost their lives due to farming-related incidents from 1990 to 2020. Children one to four years of age had the highest fatality rate.
“Even one child or youth harmed in a farm-related incident is far too many. That is why we must come together as an industry to ensure the safety of kids on our farms is always a top priority,” says Sandra Miller, CASA’s executive director. “Kids FarmSafe Week serves as a reminder about the importance of teaching safety lessons from an early age and making proactive risk prevention a guiding principle on farms so that our young people are protected today and empowered to lead the agricultural sector tomorrow.”
Kids FarmSafe Week features daily themes on specific health and safety concerns affecting kids on the farm. This year’s topics focus on machinery safety, rail and road safety, animal safety, safe entertainment, and empowering farm kids. The weeklong campaign will also feature an online forum with insights about safely raising kids on the farm, as well as a farm safety colouring contest with prizes. Details about the forum and colouring contest can be found at www.kidsfarmsafe.ca.
BASF Agricultural Solutions Canada (BASF) is the presenting sponsor of this year’s Kids FarmSafe Week and a dedicated farm safety champion. The long-standing partnership of BASF with CASA has included collaborations on teaching kits, online resources, and the BASF Safety Scouts program.
