The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reports that U.S. potato plantings totaled 873,000 acres (353,976 hectares) in 2026, down from 902,000 acres (365,027 hectares) in 2025. The 29,000-acre (11,736-hectare) reduction represents a 3.2 per cent decline year on year.

Idaho accounted for the largest decrease, with planted area falling by 15,000 acres (6,070 hectares), from 315,000 acres (127,476 hectares) in 2025 to 300,000 acres (121,406 hectares) in 2026.

The USDA also forecasts harvested area at 867,600 acres (351,139 hectares) in 2026, down from 896,800 acres (362,953 hectares) in 2025.
