India has imposed tariffs on 28 U.S. products including apples effective June 16. The tariff on apples will increase from 50 to 80 per cent. The Red Delicious variety is the most frequently traded to India. 

The move is in retaliation for American tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. But it also signals a worsening relationship with the U.S. which withdrew its preferential trading relationship with India earlier this month.

According to the Financial Express, the U.S. sent 7.7 million boxes to India last year valued at $118 million U.S. One million boxes of apples are currently on container ships en route to India. 

The announcement is timed ahead of the G20 summit which will be held in Japan June 28-29, 2019.
