In nominating former Iowa governor Tom Vilsack to reprise his role as agriculture secretary, president-elect Joe Biden is also leaning on the architect of his rural America campaign. Land conservation is one of the platforms. He’s vowing to pay farmers to plant cover crops.

 

This climate-smart practice fits with one of Biden’s key pillars:  addressing climate change. He realizes that rural America defeated a cap-and-trade approach a decade ago, but he thinks there’s a way to reset the narrative by building on land stewardship.
