British Columbia’s government has announced a 3.9 per cent pay raise to minimum wage workers. As of June 1, the rate will be $17.40 per hour.

The new rate will affect farm employers who employ domestic labour and bring about 7,500 workers from Mexico and the Caribbean to the province each year. However, those numbers are fluctuating in 2024 due to the January freeze that severely affected grape and tree fruit crops.

The government says the minimum piece rates for 15 hand-harvested crops will also increase by 3.9 per cent on Dec. 31, 2024. The decision to delay the pay raise for hand-harvested crops is meant to ensure producers will not have to adjust wages in the harvest season.
