Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada sector specialist for fruit, Farid Makki, explained how the Canadian apple industry compares to global production at the recent Fruit and Vegetable Growers of Canada annual general meeting in Ottawa.
Some highlights from his presentation include:
- - Canada’s apple production is 0.39% of the global production.
- - The top 10 producers supply 78.5% of the global apple production. China is the largest with 54% of the production, the USA is 5%.
- - Canada’s top export markets are USA and Vietnam with 43% and 41% of total exports respectively (based on 3-year average). Canada is the 10th top importer of fresh apple imports in 2024 accounting for 2.6% of global imports.
- - Combined volume of imports for the top five varieties represented 36% of all fresh apple imports from Washington state during the first five months of 2025/2026, compared to 46% the previous year and 47% for the five-year average (full-year).
- - Washington state imported volume during the first five months of 2025/26 (August to December 2025) was 11.1% lower than same period year ago.
- - Washington Gala imported volume during five first months of 2025/26 (August to December 2025) was 15.4% lower than during the same period a year ago. The average value/lb. was 1.3% lower compared to a year ago.
- - Washington Honeycrisp imported volume during five first months of 2025/26 (August to December 2025) was 19.7% lower than during the same period a year ago. The average value/lb. was 56.3% higher compared to a year ago.
