After an illustrious career spanning nearly 40 years with the Asparagus Farmers of Ontario, John Jaques has announced his retirement, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and leadership within the Asparagus Farmers of Ontario community. Jaques, who served 12 years as chair, has been an integral part of the asparagus industry, advocating for farmers and championing sustainable agricultural practices.
Throughout his tenure, Jaques has been instrumental in guiding all Ontario fruit and vegetable farmers through periods of significant change. John has been involved in many ways over the years: past chair of Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association while also the chair of its Safety Nets committee, past chair of the finance committee of Canadian Horticultural Council, past chair of Ontario Agricultural Commodity Council, director on Fox Seeds, on the North American Asparagus committee and the inaugural chair of the Ontario Fresh Vegetable Growers.
Jaques was involved on a federal/provincial committee to develop an alternative to traditional crop insurance for fresh fruits and vegetables and successfully led the charge to implement SDRM (self directed risk management) for edible horticulture. All of this provided several million dollars to fresh fruit and vegetable farmers, ensuring the benefits to all edible horticulture farming. His vision and commitment have helped cultivate a thriving agricultural community, enhancing the reputation both locally and internationally.
“John’s impact on edible horticulture farmers cannot be overstated,” said said Mike Chromczak, asparagus grower and vice chair of Ontario Fruit & Vegetable Growers’ Association. “His dedication and passion for our industry have inspired countless farmers, and his leadership has paved the way for future generations. We are grateful for his years of service and the profound influence he has had in our agricultural sector.”
Jaques’ journey in agriculture began almost four decades ago, when he embarked on a mission to improve the standards and practices of asparagus farming in Ontario. Under his leadership, the industry has witnessed advancements in technology, marketing strategies, disaster coverage and sustainability initiatives that have contributed to the success of all fruit and vegetable farmers across the country.
During the years, John Jaques has built with family members, Sunshine Asparagus, a successful farm enterprise at Thamesville, Ontario with wholesale production and an on-farm retail outlet both of which thrive today.
