Fall armyworm on sweet corn

Determining levels of pests and trends in their numbers is the necessary first step to informed pest management. Now, a newly expanded monitoring network comprising the Great Lakes and Maritimes growing areas will gather and publish real-time data to growers of sweet corn and snap beans.

Pests to be included in the monitoring are: western bean cutworm, European corn borer, corn earworm, black cutworm, true armyworm and fall armyworm. 

The network is a collaboration of state and provincial participants from Manitoba, Michigan, Ohio, New York, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.  It’s free for anyone to join. 

Tracey Baute, OMAFRA field crops entomologist says that the existing pest trap network has been such a success that it has been expanded to include more pests and areas for 2019.

As participants monitor their traps and send in their counts, the network will generate real-time maps showing the pests reported. Users will also have their own dashboard to summarize their trapping data throughout the season.

Baute thanked all of the crop consultants, scouts, extension personnel, farmers and researchers who have been monitoring traps and submitting their weekly counts to make the information available.
