After several years developing and leading programs and projects at the Honey Bee Veterinary Consortium, Dr Britteny Kyle has taken on a new role as lead specialist for the Ontario Beekeepers’ Association’s (OBA’s) Technology Transfer Program.

Dr. Kyle received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 2009 at the University of Guelph where she is currently completing her PhD. Her Masters research mapped a bacterial disease of honey bees known as American foulbrood (AFB). In her PhD research, Dr Kyle has focussed on increasing understanding of AFB prevalence and how beekeepers are managing AFB in their operations.

Steve Moore, president of the OBA says, “We are very excited to welcome Dr Kyle to the team. In addition to her research experience, Dr Kyle brings leadership skills and not-for-profit experience from her work with the Honey Bee Veterinary Consortium.”

Since it was founded in the early 1990s by Dr Medhat Nasr, the TTP has made important contributions to beekeeping research and extension. Two of the three new mite control products currently under review by Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency include data generated through recent TTP field trials.

According to Dr Kyle, “It is a real privilege to be taking on this leadership role at the TTP. The team has a strong track record and I look forward to continuing to find innovative solutions to current and future challenges facing Ontario beekeepers.”

Dr. Kyle is eager to deepen her connections with Ontario beekeepers and building on her collaborations with academic researchers and her counterparts in other provincial associations.
