On June 1, 2024, Fresh Start Produce Sales of Delray, Florida recalled whole field cucumbers shipped to certain states from May 17 through May 21, 2024, due to the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Ontario Greenhouse Vegetable Growers (OGVG) is aware that several media outlets have inaccurately showcased images of long English cucumbers as part of their media release. As we work to correct this oversight with each individual media outlet, we want to assure retailers, food service and consumers that the Canadian-grown long English cucumbers are not part of the recall and are readily available for purchase and safe consumption.

“Ontario greenhouse cucumbers are distinctly different from field-grown cucumbers,” said Richard Lee, executive director of OGVG. “Field-grown cucumbers are shorter and wider than the long, narrow English cucumbers and have a more bitter flavour. English cucumbers are sweeter and contain very few seeds.”

Ontario greenhouses provide a protected environment using advanced hydroponic technology, computerized climate control, and integrated pest management to ensure that the year-round supply of produce is safe, fresh, and nutritious for consumption. The attached image illustrates the difference between long English and field-grown cucumbers.
