The University of Guelph has named Paul Hoekstra as its first executive director, agri-food strategy and partnership

Most recently vice president of strategic development with Grain Farmers of Ontario, Hoekstra brings more than 20 years of experience in strategic leadership and stewardship roles across Ontario’s agri-food sector. He will begin serving in the new role Nov. 9.

“U of G has a unique role in shaping the future of Ontario’s agri-food sector,” said Dr. Rene Van Acker, president and vice-chancellor. “Paul will strengthen how we work with partners across the sector, bringing the right people and expertise together to advance shared priorities and seize new opportunities.”

As the first executive director, agri-food strategy and partnerships, Hoekstra will help build strategic connections between U of G expertise and industry and business priorities, creating new opportunities for collaboration and impact across the agri-food sector. Central to this work will be the continued advancement of the Ontario Agri-Food Innovation Alliance, a province-wide platform for agri-food research, training and innovation.

“Strong partnerships help ensure U of G’s world-class research continues to address the issues that matter most to farmers, businesses and communities,” said Dr. Mazyar Fallah, vice-president, research and innovation. “This new role will help strengthen the University’s longstanding work with agri-food partners to support a more competitive, sustainable and resilient sector through research and innovation.”

The announcement comes during Ontario Agriculture Week, a celebration of the farmers, producers, processors and businesses that contribute to one of the province’s most important economic sectors.

“Ontario Agriculture Week is a time to celebrate the farmers, businesses, and organizations that make Ontario’s agri-food sector one of the province’s greatest strengths,” said Hoesktra. “I’m honoured to join U of G and contribute to its long tradition of leadership and partnership. U of G’s ability to connect world-class research with real-world opportunities sets it apart, and I look forward to working with partners across the sector to drive innovation, sustainability, and competitiveness for Ontario agriculture and beyond.”

Hoekstra holds a PhD in environmental biology from the University of Guelph and a bachelor of science from the University of Waterloo.
