British Columbia Premier David Eby declared a provincial state of emergency on August 8, as new wildfires threatened the Summerland area in the Okanagan Valley. More than 20,000 people have been evacuated. 

“British Columbians are waking up today to devastating news from the South Okanagan,” Eby said. “Since first reported early yesterday evening, the Bald Range wildfire has grown rapidly as winds intensified, pushing into the Summerland area and affecting communities throughout the surrounding valleys.” 

As of August 10, the Bald Range fire had burned 15,590 hectares according to the BC Wildfire Service. Highway 97 between Summerland and Peachland remains closed as of 10 am, August 10.  

Summerland is in the heart of the tree fruit growing area and is home to many supporting industries. Details are scarce about the impact to fruit harvesting.

For its part, the Western Agriculture Labour Initiative (WALI) reports it is in direct contact with affected employers, consulates and partners to support impacted workers. “At this time, all workers we are aware of are safe and have been evacuated,” WALI said.
