The nectarine 'test market' that specifies Canada No. 1 grade standard is now extended until a review is completed. This is a relief to growers because the test market was set to expire on July 22, 2024.

The British Columbia Fruit Growers’ Association and Ontario Tender Fruit Growers had sponsored a resolution to the Fruit and Vegetable Growers of Canada annual meeting in early March that noted the significant costs to industry if the test market and related quality standards were allowed to expire. News of the extension of the test market will mean that packaging inventory with the Canada No. 1 designation can continue to be used until a new approach to grades modernization has been formalized.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed the extension on March 25, 2024. The agency is working to establish a more efficient model for grades that will facilitate trade and support economic growth while aligning with its mandate, priorities and resources.
