The Berry Growers of Ontario has presented the Award of Merit to Tom Heeman, Heeman’s, London, Ontario, as he steps off the board of directors after six years.
Heeman is an innovator, working with his family to grow and market berries, along with a huge selection of greenhouse crops in their garden centre, taking care of Heeman’s bees and most recently launching a hard apple cider and mead business.
He is very active in the agricultural industry, taking on several leadership roles besides Berry Growers of Ontario, including North American Strawberry Growers Association, Middlesex London Food Policy Council, Middlesex ALUS Public Advisory Council, the Western Fair Board, and a municipal councillor.
On a broader level, Heeman is dedicated to furthering agricultural research and policies, always working to better the industry. He was integral to the success and smooth running of the 2020 Pick Your Own season, a time when much was uncertain in the world due to COVID. He is also an active member of the Achene committee, working together with a team to ensure a successful future of the SPUD unit.
The Award of Merit recognizes someone who has dedicated time and effort to the advancement of the Ontario berry industry and/or has had a positive impact on the industry over their career or through voluntary work on behalf of the industry. Past recipients have been long-standing board members, researchers, OMAFRA berry specialists, and overall leaders in the industry.
