Tiny package, huge benefit for cherry growers

HazelCherry, the brain child of Hazel Technologies Inc. is being launched as its new post-harvest, shelf-extending technology in addition to avocados and apricots. Prior to its launch, Hazel Technologies piloted the product with cherry packers in the Pacific Northwest and worked with Cornell University to ensure excellent fruit quality.

“Our study showed using Hazel Cherry compared to an untreated control can result in better stem quality, lower decay, and lower rate of pitting in the ‘Royal’ cherry variety,” said Cornell University professor Chris Watkins.

So how does it work? HazelCherry contains 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), which reduces respiration of the fruit and increases resistance to ethylene, the gas naturally produced as part of the ripening and senescence process. The 1-MCP binds to ethylene receptors in the fruit, thereby reducing its production.

For the 2019 season, Hazel Technologies plans more trials with industry partners, as the company reports industry interest has steadily grown.
