The United Nations, through the Food and Agriculture Organization, has designated May 30 as a day to honour the humble spud. The date was chosen to align with Peru’s National Potato Day.
Through its widespread cultivation and consumption, the crop contributes to key objectives of sustainable development goals, such as achieving zero hunger, promoting sustainable agriculture and advancing economic opportunities. Potatoes are not just a staple in the diets of many people but also provide key opportunities for employment and sustainable economic growth along their value chains.
The Prince Edward Island Potato Board has organized an awareness campaign that ranges from radio interviews to the Cavendish Farms Fry truck at Founders’ Food Hall and Market in Charlottetown. A social media campaign will feature local farmers.
