The Fruit and Vegetable Growers of Canada (FVGC) has announced its support for Canada’s Grocery Sector Code of Conduct, heralding a new era of fairness and transparency in the Canadian food supply chain. This initiative, forged through the collaborative efforts of growers, processors, retailers, and major industry players such as Loblaw, Walmart, and Empire, represents a significant achievement in the Canadian agri-food industry.

Jan VanderHout, president of the FVGC, is enthusiastic about this landmark development: “Canada’s Grocery Sector Code of Conduct symbolizes a new chapter of equity and sustainability in Canadian agriculture. It’s a testament to the relentless efforts and unity among all stakeholders. We are ensuring a fair and equitable environment for our growers, which is fundamental for the prosperity of the entire supply chain.”

The Grocery Sector Code of Conduct stands as a testament to the commitment of FVGC and its partners to establish a system that benefits everyone involved, from the field to the supermarket. This initiative is expected to stabilize the incomes of growers, ensuring they are compensated fairly for their hard work and dedication, thus enabling the sustainable production of high-quality, nutritious produce for all Canadians.

Importantly, consumers stand to benefit significantly from the implementation of Canada’s Grocery Sector Code of Conduct. The Code is not anticipated to result in additional costs to consumers. It is designed to streamline efficiencies and foster a collaborative environment within the supply chain, which could lead to better stability and potentially more competitive prices for consumers.

Moreover, Canada’s Grocery Sector Code of Conduct acts as a protective measure for the entire supply chain. It addresses longstanding issues such as payment terms and contract fairness, which are crucial for the viability and sustainability of Canadian growers. This proactive step aims to fortify the food system, enabling it to better withstand challenges and continue to provide for Canadians nationwide.

FVGC is committed to continuing its collaborative efforts with all stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation and adherence to this code. This initiative is seen as a monumental step towards a brighter future for the Canadian fruit and vegetable sector, benefitting everyone from growers to consumers.
