A series of meetings for apple growers across the Okanagan are scheduled for March 11-13  to discuss the potential formation of a BC Apple Marketing Commission.

For the past several years, many apple growers have seen poor financial returns from their orchards and industry leaders began to consider several ideas to help improve the industry.

“Beginning in 2021, there has been a lot of research and discussion by BC apple growers looking at new ways to collaborate on the marketing their apples,” said Glen Lucas of the BC Fruit Growers’ Association. “The potential to establish an apple marketing commission, similar to Ontario, Québec, Michigan, and New York has drawn real interest.”

From March 11-13, there will be small grower meetings in Oliver, Cawston, Kelowna, and Vernon, as well as additional online meetings for growers to learn more and provide feedback.

Ultimately, the establishment of a BC Apple Marketing Commission would require the support of BC apple growers in a non-binding vote and enabling regulation by the provincial government to begin operation.

A website was developed in summer 2023 by the Orderly Marketing Project Management Committee, a volunteer committee of growers and industry representatives, to explore the idea of orderly marketing –  including an apple marketing commission - for BC.

The grower sessions will be facilitated by Purdeep Sangha, a well-known, international business advisor, who also has deep family roots in BC’s tree fruit industry. In addition to Sangha, the meetings will also be led by Jim Collins, who has extensive experience in the BC and Canadian regulated marketing field.

“It is crucial for growers to have the chance to inquire about the mechanisms of a prospective apple marketing commission aimed at enhancing growers' returns.” said Sangha.

To attend the upcoming meetings, growers must pre-register online.
